How does a PT help you? They can assist with exercises and treatments for pain management, to improve your movement or ability, prevent or recover from a serious injury, rehabilitation after a stroke, accident, injury, or surgery. A PT can also work on balance to prevent a slip or fall, manage a chronic illness like diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, assist in control your bowel or bladder issues. They also can assist in adaptation to an artificial limb, teach you to use assistive devices like a walker or cane, help you acquire a splint or a brace post surgery.
An Occupational therapist (OT) teaches you how to adapt. They can help you perform any kind of task at school, work, or in your home. You’ll learn how to use tools (you may hear them called assistive devices) if you need them. You’ll meet with a health professional called an occupational therapist who can come up with ways to change your movements so you can get your work done, take care of yourself or your home, play sports, or stay active. They can help you do specific things like: eat without help from others, take part in leisure activities, do office work, bathe and get dressed. An OT can train you to use assistive devices like raised toilet seats or wheelchairs, teach you new ways to button a shirt, tie your shoes, get in and out of the shower, work on your computer, help prevent falls in their home or in public areas, treat adults who’ve had a stroke to improve balance, change their home to prevent injuries, build muscle strength, or adapt to their memory or speech problems. They can also organize your medications or household tools, build hand-eye coordination so you can hit a tennis ball and work on motor skills so you can grasp a pencil.
Who Needs Occupational Therapy?
Just about anyone who struggles to do any kind of task may need it.
If you have one of these health problems, ask your doctor if OT could help you:
A speech therapist or Speech Language Pathologist, is most often used in the nursing home following up with a stroke victim for swallowing disorders, or dysphagia., but they can be very beneficial in other ways. Speech therapy for adults begins with assessment to determine your needs and the best treatment. Speech therapy exercises for adults can help you with speech, language, and cognitive communication. Therapy may also include retraining of swallowing function if an injury or medical condition, such as CardioVascular Accident (CVA or stroke), Parkinson's Disease or oral cancer has caused swallowing difficulties. Exercises may involve: problem solving, memory, and organization, and other activities geared at improving cognitive communication, conversational tactics to improve social communication, breathing exercises for resonance, and exercises to strengthen oral muscles. There are many resources available if you’re looking to try speech therapy exercises at home, including: speech therapy apps, language development games and toys such as flip cards and flash cards, and workbooks
